The area around La Haute Hague has activities for everyone. As well as the many pretty towns and villages to visit, you can go horse riding, go-karting or canoeing. For a family day out, try Festyland (50 minutes away, near Caen) - or you could just find a quiet spot in the garden and settle down with a good book!
Champrepus Zoo: set amidst landscaped parkland, the zoo (just 5 minutes away) is beautifully laid out and has carefully marked pathways, ensuring you miss nothing along the way. In some areas of the zoo, you are free to roam amongst the animals - and there is also an excellent children’s area with bouncy castles and play equipment.
The Bayeux Tapestry: the charming town of Bayeux is under an hour away from La Haute Hague. Although famous for its tapestry depicting the 1066 Battle of Hastings, the town and its lovely cathedral are well worth exploring.
Hambye Abbey: the Abbey is about 10 minutes away from La Haute Hague. Although part of the building is now in ruins, the Abbey is still in use and guided tours are offered.
The Normandy Landing Beaches: the main Normandy Landing beaches are under an hour away from La Haute Hague and many have interesting exhibitions and museums to visit.
Villedieu-les-Poêles: La Haute Hague is just minutes away from Villedieu-les-Poêles. This small town - famous for its locally-crafted copperware - has a lively weekly market and an impressive bell foundry, where some of the largest bells in the world have been made. The foundry’s Visitors’ Centre is fascinating and is highly recommended by other guests, as are the museums of lace-making, traditional Norman furniture and copper kitchenware.
Coutances: Coutances (25 minutes) is a lovely town for shopping and exploring. The magnificent Coutances Cathedral can be seen from miles around and is open to visitors all year (apart from Jazz Festival week in early summer).
Mont-Saint-Michel: the breathtaking and beautiful Mont-Saint-Michel is 45 minutes away from La Haute Hague. Mont-Saint-Michel is a small island connected to the mainland by a causeway (similar to St-Michael’s Mount in Cornwall). The narrow streets of the island’s town wind uphill to an ancient monastery which still has a drawbridge and cannon. Although most of the shops now sell gifts for tourists, the Medieval buildings and cobbled streets are still a delight.
Caen: if you enjoy shopping, have a day out in Caen - but remember to watch out for the trams! The Mémorial-de-Caen and Pegasus Bridge draw visitors from all over the world. The Mémorial-de-Caen is a huge war museum and you should allow a whole day to be able to visit it properly.
Granville: the very popular holiday town of Granville is 25 minutes away and is encircled by wartime Nazi bunkers and guns! Granville has an aquarium, a lighthouse and many superb shops and restaurants to explore - as well as miles and miles of golden sandy beaches with numerous water sports on offer.
Jersey: a ferry trip to the island of Jersey is a wonderful day out. Ferries depart from Granville daily.
